Noragami Season 3: Release Date (2021 Update)

Noragami is an anime series based on a Japanese manga series (also called Noragami) written by Adachitoka. The show quickly became popular, but like so many other popular animes, seemed to have fizzled out completely by the end of the second season. This has left fans disappointed and longing for more information, why was it canceled, will there be any more seasons; if so when? This short article will answer all of that and more.

The show’s history

The anime series is based on the book of the same name by Adachitoka. The series follows a minor god who is determined to build a following of widespread love and worship. His ultimate goal is to have a shrine dedicated to himself. The manga series was very cleverly written and the anime followed suit. The show finally aired for the first time in January of 2014, the show boasted just 12 episodes (a short season as animes go). The show was a huge success and was quickly renewed for a second season at the end of 2015; for a further 13 episodes. This looked to be a good sign for a third season in the works, alas, silence. But why

Why was it canceled?

The second season of the show left the fans with an intense cliffhanger, everything indicated to there being a third season in the works; but there wasn’t. This means fans have been hanging on to that cliff for 5 years now. The problem is simply that there is not enough source material to release a third season of the same quality that the first and second were. This is a regularly occurring problem in shows based off of previous media sources. The show’s producers and staff are sat around waiting for the author of the manga to get far enough ahead in the story that it can start being adapted for television. This is not a problem that affects just anime shows, but all television shows.

Rumors and news

Since it has been almost 5 years now since the last season aired, there has been a lot of time for rumors to start circulating, whilst many are purely speculation some are based on fact. Here is what we do know:

The 20th volume of the Noragami manga series has just been released. This means that there is likely now enough material for the third season. On average, anywhere between 5-10 manga books are needed to make a series. This means that there is now likely enough material for them to start producing, or at least start planning for the next season. This could mean that season 3 may be released in 2020, or even 2021. 5 to 6 years will have passed since the last season aired, meaning the expectations are huge. If the show is not a big success, fans are going to make their feelings heard. Its already been so long, what’s another year? Wouldn’t it be better for them to make sure they get season 3 right than rush it? That choice is up to you.
